In the quest for new gratifications, our culture has transitioned from a needs-driven paradigm to one fueled by insatiable desires. The possibility of constant consumption through the interaction between the epidermis of the fingertip and the micro-designed surface of a mobile screen today unravels an intercontinental journey of data and material that is changing our lives and cities. An ever-accelerating perpetual feedback loop between reality, algorithm and desire, where all surroundings are in constant motion while the physical body experiences a pathological standstill.

The Fulfillment Paradox delves into this intricate tapestry of human desires, consumer culture, and the relentless machinery of the logistics chain. It illuminates the profound contradictions that arise in the strive for endless growth and acceleration in times of environmental chaos when our yearning for immediate shopping satisfaction collide with the far-reaching implications of the accelerated pursuit of fulfillment. It is a neither dystopian nor utopian reflection of what is with the playful invitation to critically imagining what could be.

For thousands of years, the German coastal lands have been tormented by the North Sea. During the past eight centuries, their residents have been building and maintaining dykes, to protect settlements and agriculture from the power of angry storm surges. But rising sea levels and the reality of climate change is rendering this infrastructure, which has grown far beyond a construction project and embedded itself at the heart into everyday life, excessive and futile.

The Thesis proposes a daring almost reckless alternative to the conventional raising of dikes, by instead breaking this very barrier at strategic points to initiate sediment soil growth along the European North Sea coast.

Within the scenario of semi-annual floods, a new spatial and programmatic paradigm is developed, layering marine ecology with agriculture and tourism. The architectural expression dwells upon a possible new vernacular that equally caters for and poetically frames this landscape en mouvement.

The method of building large scale landscape models is based around extensive research in scientific fields of marine ecology and hydrological engineering, alongside more sociological and anthropological fieldwork visiting the remote yet specific sites and speaking extensively to members of the community.

An abandoned soviet hotel in the centre of Chisinau - the capital city of the Republic of Moldova - is being put under heritage protection after 15 years of demolition plans. While a welcome decision - the building being one of the most important examples of Soviet modernist architecture in the country - there is no vision for the future of the ensemble.

The project picks up the current physical, legal, and political situation of the hotel and - by comparing it to the current struggles of the country in the search for identity after the independence - proposes a vision where the society can come together and unite around. It picks up local elements, such as the still existing tradition of claca - the tradition of voluntarily building, planting and working together for a common goal - in order to create a new collective identity and overcome the divisive memories of the soviet past. The project doesn’t provide a definitive solution - as the future is currently too uncertain - but rather lays the first strategic stone for a process that is to develop.

Im Jahr 2012 beschloss die SBB den Abbruch eines Gebäudes auf dem Gelände des Bahnhofs Brig. Die Fliesen auf einem der Geschosse waren bereits herausgespitzt, als die Abrissarbeiten eingestellt wurden. Die Verhinderung des Abbruchs ist das Ergebnis der Initiative der Stiftung Heidi + Peter Wenger. Zunächst waren die Motive für den Erhalt des Gebäudes in erster Linie architektonische, der mögliche Denkmalstatus des Gebäudes ist jedoch auch durch Kriterien jenseits der Architektur zu begründen.

Die Autoren beschäftigten sich in der Recherche zum Gebäude und seinem historischen und sozialpolitischen Kontext mit der Frage, was die Rolle des Gebäudes heute sein könnte. Mit einer Veranstaltungsreihe mit Gesprächen mit Betroffenen, Filmscreenings und Performances erpropten sie Möglichkeiten der Mediation tabuisierter Themen und erarbeiteten einen Vorschlag, wie die Räume dieser historisch bedeutsamen Grenzsanität als Ort der Vermittlung, des Austauschs und der Aussöhnung dienen könnten.

Questo lavoro combina vari temi, dall’edilizia di montagna alle infrastrutture, dalle conseguenze del cambiamento climatico all’architettura del paesaggio, in una chiave abbastanza inconsueta per le opere statiche, ovvero quella del cambiamento perpetuo. In una vallata vallesana, il ghiacciaio si ritira, lasciando sul suo letto roccioso dei laghi, con conseguente rischio di smottamenti. Ed è proprio questo che la grande struttura di sostegno prevista dal progetto vuole evitare. Creando una specie di rastrello, si intendono collocare, nella direzione della valle, dodici elementi a forma di Z per intercettare i detriti ma lasciare defluire l’acqua. Con il tempo si formerà spontaneamente uno sbarramento con l’accumulo dei ciottoli oppure si riunirà il materiale raccolto e si edificherà una diga, grazie all’aiuto di un sistema di gru incluso nel progetto. La funivia necessaria per la costruzione verrà successivamente utilizzata per il trasporto degli escursionisti. 

Il lavoro risulta convincente per l’impiego di pochi mezzi, la forma forte e la combinazione di pragmatismo e poesia – esattamente in sintonia con la tradizione dell’architettura alpina.

Niente meno che un nuovo paesaggio acquatico per la Svizzera: è questa la promessa del titolo del progetto. L’autrice propone un nuovo approccio per la gestione delle risorse idriche: con lo scioglimento dei ghiacciai, verranno meno le riserve d’acqua dolce e l’Altopiano dovrà fare da spugna. Partendo dall’esempio dei serbatoi del Cantone di Zurigo, dove confluiscono la Limmat, l’Aare e il Reno, l’autrice indica una possibile prospettiva sotto il profilo della costruzione. Le infrastrutture attuali, come i garage sotterranei, si potrebbero riempire temporaneamente per farne delle cisterne, mentre i nuovi bacini di compensazione si potrebbero sfruttare in via provvisoria come piscine. 

Interessante dal punto di vista idrologico, lo studio viene visualizzato con tinte cupe, quasi a voler sottolineare, anche graficamente, l’urgenza del tema.

«Das Unfertighaus» (Il palazzo incompleto) rappresenta la capacità di continuare a costruire senza modificare il contesto. L’oggetto di studio è un complesso abitativo sito lungo il perimetro di un isolato nei pressi della stazione degli autobus di Zurigo. I due autori integrano e aggiungono piccoli elementi nella sostanza esistente, aumentando così l’utilità del costruito.

Il progetto è stato realizzato con grande meticolosità sulla base di un modello, e una pubblicazione documenta l’attenta analisi della sostanza esistente e degli interventi. 

La mescolanza di vecchio e nuovo che ne deriva va ben oltre il puro concetto di riutilizzo. La giuria ha apprezzato il lavoro intellettuale di questo approccio, ritenendo che apra la via a un’architettura del futuro: gli autori lavorano con ciò che già c’è, aggiungendo piccoli tocchi poetici per creare un valore aggiunto sotto il profilo della cultura della costruzione.
